Definitions

• Semiotics - The study of signs, symbols, and how they are communicated
• Denotation - what someone literally says; the text that is written
• Connotation - what is not directly stated, but which is conjured forth by an image, text, etc.
• Ideas an image invokes/suggests
• Icon - any image used to represent a person, place, thing, or idea
• Tone - the feeling evoked from viewing and interpreting a sign, symbol, image, text, that comes from the artist
• Metaphor - a symbol or icon that implicitly represents another thing
